I trained with Civil Ceremonies Ltd, gaining the highest qualifications achievable in the UK; NOCN Level 3 Diploma in Naming and Couples (RQF) and NOCN Level 3 Diploma in Funeral Celebrancy (RQF). I have also attended a workshop on Hand Fasting, conducted by a Priestess from the Goddess Temple in Glastonbury. I am a member of the Association of Independent Celebrants (this covers me for public liability and insurances). I am also DBS checked. You can also find me on the www.thecelebrantdirectory.com.
I believe that a great celebrant sets the right balance between, being someone who cares deeply about helping couples and families create their ceremony, centred around what is important to them, being a good listener, writer and creator, and a person who is able to do the occasion the justice it deserves, by delivering ceremonies to a very high professional standard.
To me a celebrant is like a trusty tool, there to make life easier, and when I think about being a celebrant, I think what an honour it is to conduct a funeral for a family, and what a privilege it is to be a part of helping a couple create their dream wedding celebration. Whatever the reason behind the ceremony, these are special occasions, important milestones in people’s lives, and what really strikes me is their significance for the people directly involved; yet these ceremonies and the words, only happen the once, but the memories and meaning endure, so it is well worth putting in the effort and care to ensure that they are of the very best.
Of course, the ‘very best’ is the ceremony that you picture in your mind. I am here to help with the rest, realising exactly what you hoped for and making the process as stress free as possible. Not everyone is a natural born writer, and many people know how they love or care for someone, but would struggle to express these sentiments in words. Be it your vows, a eulogy for a loved one, or your parent promises for a naming ceremony, I aim to make everyone feel at ease through the process, and be able to create a script that conveys exactly what you want to say and how you would like it said.
I am a very creative celebrant, both in terms of the writing as much as ideas for your ceremony, and I work with clients to pin point exactly what they would like, weaving it all into a seamless celebration. Still very chuffed to have won the school English Prize many moons ago, writing has always been something that I am good at, and really enjoy. I am used to public speaking and have years of experience in event based management and chairing meetings, which are just some of the skills that help greatly in my line of work.
I live in mid Devon but spend a great deal of time in North Cornwall, so offer my services in both county and Duchy. I am happy to travel as required, certainly offering couple’s ceremonies in London and surrounding counties. I am more than happy to conduct ceremonies internationally, or help couples from outside of the UK to marry here (I am not able to marry you legally. I write and conduct the main ceremony, that takes place after the legal formalities). Be it a wedding or funeral, I am very happy to consider your wishes on any sort of theme or dress code, but do reserve the right to decline, just in case it’s something I felt was not appropriate for me to wear.
Variety is the spice of life and I can’t really say that I have a favourite type of ceremony. I love grandeur and the formality of tradition as much as I enjoy casual, quirky and modest, and I cater for everything on the scale. Something that I would like to think that I will always build my practice around, is that this might be my umpteenth funeral or wedding celebration, but each one is unique and special for the people that are trusting me to deliver it for them, and the one time it happens, is the only time it happens, so it has to be the best and I give it my all every time.
